Pieter Mulder retires after almost 30 years as a member of parliament

The former leader of the FF Plus, Dr. Pieter Mulder retired after almost 30 years as a parliamentarian.

During that time he spent five years serving as Deputy Minister of Agriculture in Jacob Zuma’s Cabinet. It led to a division in his party, and his youth leader, Cornelius Kanse van Rensburg, and parliamentarian Willie Spies resigned from the party in protest.

During his farewell to parliament, he was greeted by the members with a standing ovation.

Later on, he will announce the name of the member who will follow him as the leader, and will also highlight his impressions and assessment of positive and negative changes in parliament in three decades.

During his time, he saw six presidents come and go, describing them as follows:

PW Botha: “Party-political apparatchik;”

FW de Klerk: “Good debater and political gambler;”

Nelson Mandela: “Victorian gentleman – who retired just in time;”

Thabo Mbeki: “British intellect with complicated hang-ups;”

Kgalema Motlanthe: “Wise leader and unionist – whose humility looked like a lack of self-esteem;
