Mathews Phosa, almost in the same breath asking Jacob Zuma to resign, has indicated that he is also eligible for the ANC’s leadership and that he is entitled to lead the country as president.

Phosa was formerly the Treasury general of the ANC and also the premier of the Eastern Transvaal.

During a speech in Langa on the Cape Peninsula, he encouraged ANC members to support him in his call for Zuma to resign and said they should not be deceived by populists and false prophets.

He accused the current ANC leadership of theft, corruption, and gross mismanagement and stated that they do nothing for people of the country.

Some ANC branches nominated Phosa for the ANC leadership, and he accepted it, which means there are officially three candidates in the race to succeed Zuma. In addition to Phosa, it is also the current deputy president, Cyril Ramaphosa and Zuma’s ex-wife, Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma.
