Pedestrian knocked over by fleeing suspects in high-speed chase

A pedestrian was knocked down by a speeding vehicle on Friday, as its occupants were allegedly trying to evade arrest.

The high-speed chase between the Johannesburg Metro Police and the suspects ended in the arrest of two people, but in their wake they also left the occupants of another car injured after a collision, metro police said.

“Officers chased a Nissan Navara for skipping a red light along Albertina Sisulu Road and during the chase the Navara knocked over a pedestrian,” chief superintendent Wayne Minnaar told News24.

Details of the pedestrian’s injuries were not immediately available.

The incident happened around 11:00.

“They then collided head-on with a Hyundai, at which point it came to a stop.”

Officers fired shots at the Nissan and arrested two suspects, who were found in possession of an illegal firearm.

A third suspect escaped.

Minnaar said the Navara has been linked to several hijackings.

“No [one was] injured, except for the pedestrian and the occupants of the Hyundai,” Minnaar said.

The suspects were arrested near the Mayfair train station, around the corner from Albertina Sisulu Road and Church Street.
