The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) on Thursday said it will appeal Oscar Pistorius’s six year sentence for murder.

The former paralympian was sentenced on July 6 for killing his model girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp on Valentine’s Day, 2013.

The state had two weeks to file an appeal.

Pistorius was initially sentenced to five years for culpable homicide and served just one year of that sentence.

But, that conviction was overturned and converted to murder by the Supreme Court of Appeal in Bloemfontein last year.

Judge Thokozile Masipa, who handed down the initial five year sentence, returned to the High Court in Pretoria to sentence him for a second time.

The six year sentence she handed down means Pistorius will be eligible for parole in three years.
