On Sunday evening 15 August 2021, Sergeant Essie Esterhuyse the detective on standby at Kakamas police station received a report to attend a murder scene at Dassiesrand Compound in Kakamas.

Sgt Esterhuyse who was enroute to the crime scene was approached by an unknown male who jumped on the back of the bakkie presumably looking for a lift.

Sgt Esterhuyse instead decided to drive to the police station to interview the unknown male.

As he accompanied him in the Community Service Centre, he noticed blood on his trousers and requested colleagues to watch the man closely and not let him out of their sight while he attended to the murder scene.

At the murder scene the body of a woman in her twenties was found lying in the field between the Compound and the turn off leading to the main road. The deceased woman was allegedly stabbed with a sharp object and beaten to death.

On the scene, Sgt Esterhuyse after interviewing witnesses established that the male person who he left at the station to interview was the possible suspect believed to be the suspect.

The 32-year-old suspect, who was in a relationship with the deceased, was subsequently arrested for murder.

The Acting District Commissioner of ZFM District, Brigadier Johny Besnaar commended Sgt Esterhuyse for his alertness and sharp investigative skills which led to the apprehension and arrest of the suspect.
