The swift response by members of Upington Border Police and ZF Mgcawu highway patrol secured the arrest of two suspects for illegal possession of counterfeit currency.

The police received information regarding alleged counterfeit currency kept at a flat in Upington on Monday, 11 December 2023. They immediately operationalised the information and searched the premises.

During the search, the police discovered counterfeit bank notes amounting to R1 864 200.00 in Rands and $2900.00 in US Dollars (R55 100.00).

Police arrested a 55-year-old man and a 24-year-old woman and they are expected to appear in court soon.

Businesses and the public are urged to familiarise themselves with the new bank notes.

Any information regarding counterfeit bank notes can be reported anonymously at the nearest police station or Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or on MySAPS App. All information will be treated with strictest confidentiality.

The District Commissioner of the ZF Mgcawu District, Maj Gen Thabo Mphuthi, commended the members for their prompt action and securing the arrests.
