The police in the Northern Cape are operationally ready for 193 protesters appearing before Kimberley and Galeshewe Magistrates Court today, 16 July 2018. The 202 suspects were arrested last Thursday for offences ranging from public violence, malicious damage to property, possession of stolen goods and business robbery.

Nine suspects already appeared before court and were each granted bail of R200. The protesters went on the rampage damaging property around Kimberley and Galeshewe.

They are demanding the resignation of Sol Plaatje Municipal Mayor, CFO and the Municipal Manager.

The Provincial Commissioner, Lt General Risimati Peter Shivuri addressed support members attached to Provincial Components this Morning about security measures. The Provincial Commissioner reiterated that lawlessness will not be tolerated and that smart and tactical approach will be used to address current situation.

Residents are urged to inform the police if they have any information relating to the situation or of possible attacks on any premises within the greater Kimberley area.
