NORTHERN CAPE — A landmark ruling in the Keimoes farm murder case has resulted in two men being sentenced to life imprisonment, with the court explicitly denying them any future possibility of parole. The severe sentences were handed down for the brutal robbery and killing of 71-year-old Hugo van Sittert, bringing a close to a high-profile case that began in early 2024.

The tragic events unfolded when 25-year-old Laurenzo Matthys, a former employee of the victim, and his 58-year-old accomplice, Henry Beukes, arrived at the deceased’s property. The duo robbed van Sittert of his vehicle, cash, groceries, and a .22 caliber hunting rifle before taking his life.

The crime was brought to light on 4 February 2024, thanks to the sharp vigilance of two law enforcement officers, Warrant Officer William Mouers and Warrant Officer Heinrich Titus. The officers spotted the suspects driving the victim’s vehicle and grew suspicious when the registered owner was absent.

After questioning the pair and receiving unsatisfactory answers regarding the owner’s whereabouts, the officers tracked them to the farm. Upon arriving at the unoccupied residence, they discovered that Beukes had sustained a gunshot wound to his hand. Both suspects were immediately arrested, and the victim’s firearm was recovered from their possession. A subsequent search led to the grim discovery of van Sittert’s body in a shallow grave near the property.

The case was spearheaded by Detective Warrant Officer William Mouers of the Keimoes Detectives, whose meticulous investigative work compiled the crucial evidence needed for a successful prosecution. Following several court appearances, Matthys and Beukes were officially convicted and sentenced on Wednesday, 28 October 2026.

They were found guilty on three primary charges, receiving the following sentences:
Murder: Life imprisonment.
Possession of an illegal firearm: 15 years’ imprisonment.
Robbery with aggravating circumstances: 15 years’ imprisonment.

The presiding court ordered that the sentences for murder and aggravated robbery run concurrently. Most notably, the judge ruled that both accused must never be considered for parole, citing the severe danger they pose to society and themselves.

Major General Monica Sebili, District Commissioner, publicly welcomed the life imprisonment sentences and applauded the successful prosecution. She specifically praised Detective Warrant Officer Mouers for his dedication and the meticulous nature of his investigation.

Major General Sebili also commended Warrant Officers Mouers and Titus for their initial vigilance, noting that their proactive approach led to the swift apprehension of the perpetrators and ensured they were held accountable. She emphasized that the successful outcome of the trial underscores the critical importance of thorough investigations and an unwavering commitment from officers in securing justice for victims of violent crime.
