KIMBERLEY – The Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in the Northern Cape, Lieutenant General Koliswa Otola is saddened and shocked by the fatal shooting which resulted in the death of two SAPS members attached to the Kimberley Flying Squad this morning, 22 August 2023 in Kimberley.

The two members, a Sergeant and a Constable were following up on information about a stolen hired sedan that was allegedly stolen and enroute from Bloemfontein.

The vehicle was spotted in Kimberley and the two members reacted when they spotted the vehicle.

The members gave chase and followed the stolen vehicle into the Transnet premises where the suspect crashed the bakkie and further fled the scene on foot.

The members gave chase and were sadly fired upon, which led to the fatal shooting of the two members.

The armed male suspect fled the scene on foot. The Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Koliswa Otola activated and mobilised all police resources in search of the armed suspect.

She indicated that an attack on members is an attack on the State. She conveyed her heartfelt condolences to the family, relatives and colleagues of the two fallen members, during a period when we as a country is celebrating and paying tribute to women who have left their footprint in history.

The 38-year-old suspect was arrested and will be charged with murder and will appear in court soon.
