NORTHERN CAPE – Two men from Tsineng have been sentenced to twelve years’ imprisonment for the attempted murder of a 37-year-old man in Kuruman, concluding a dedicated investigation by the Batlharos Detective Service.
The Regional Court in Kuruman heard details of the incident, which occurred on Saturday, 28 October 2023. The victim, identified as 37-year-old Khumoetsile Aubrey Malekanyo, was brutally assaulted by Tiisetso Tlhaole (25) and Tlhophang Batsamai (33). The investigation revealed that the two accused struck the victim on the head with a rock, inflicting severe head injuries that required immediate hospital admission on the day of the attack.
Following the victim’s hospitalization, the police registered a formal case of attempted murder. Detective Sergeant Khumoetsile Setlhauno of the Batlharos Detective Service led the diligent investigative efforts, pursuing all available leads that subsequently and definitively linked both accused individuals to the violent assault.
The court found both Tlhaole and Batsamai guilty of attempted murder. Each was handed a twelve-year imprisonment sentence. However, four years of this sentence were suspended for a period of five years, on the strict condition that they are not convicted of attempted murder or a similar offence during the suspension period. In addition to the prison terms, the court declared both men unfit to possess firearms. Consequently, the accused will each serve an effective eight-year prison sentence.
