The Northern Cape Police welcome the sentences that was handed down to three Vanwyksvlei men, in the De Aar Regional Court, on Wednesday, 7 November 2018. Two accused received 25 years imprisonment while the third male was incarcerated to an effective 30 years imprisonment, for the brutal rape of a 24 year old female.

On 5 August 2017 at about midnight, the victim was on her way home from a sports bar in Vanwyksvlei, when she was accosted by the three men. They dragged her into a veld where they took turns raping her.

The female immediately reported the case to the police and all the suspects were arrested hours later. Accused number one, Klaas van Staden (32), received 30 years imprisonment while accused number two, Isall De Vis (24) and accused number three, Machel Riegert (20) both received 25 years imprisonment.

Bail was opposed by SAPS and the suspects remained in custody up until their sentencing.

The SAPS lauds Detective Sergeant Jacobus Frits of the Carnarvon Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit for his sterling investigative work. This sentencing will send out a stern warning to all perpetrators that the Police will surely be out there in full force to ensure that no impunity is granted to offenders of such heinous crimes, especially as we are approaching the 16 Days of Activism for no violence against women and children.
