The SAPS in Northern Cape has welcomed the conviction and sentencing of a 38 year old man to three life sentences for rape.

The man was sentenced on Thursday, 30 August 2018 at Upington Regional Court. He was found guilty for raping five girls aged between 11 and 15 on different occasions.

The convict had a tuck shop and would lure the girls to the shop with sweets, cold drinks and money before raping them. The incidents happened over a period of a year before the matter was brought to the attention of the police.

He was arrested in February 2012 after a meticulous investigation conducted by Warrant Officer Marius Wessel Struweg who is the Acting Section Commander of Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS) in ZF Mgcawu Cluster.

He was found guilty on four counts of rape of which he got three life sentences and six years imprisonment. On another count of statutory rape he got six years imprisonment. All sentences will run concurrently.

The Cluster Commander of ZF Mgcawu, Major General Kolie Matthys applauded the FCS unit for securing a conviction and subsequently a hefty sentence.
