Swift reaction by Colesberg Highway Patrol members leads to arrest of three armed robbers

The swift and vigilant response of members of the Colesberg Highway patrol led to the apprehension and arrest of three male suspects on Tuesday, 30 January 2024 on the N1 road in the Colesberg policing area in the Pixely Ka-Seme district.

The Colesberg Highway patrol received a report from the police in Graaff-Reinet of a vehicle that was allegedly involved in an armed robbery in Kinkelbos in the Eastern Cape, during which an undisclosed amount of money was robbed.

While conducting patrol duties on the N9 road, the members spotted the silver VW Polo fitting the description of the vehicle circulated. The members managed to stop the vehicle next to the Weighbridge close to the sewage plant.

When the vehicle stopped, one of the suspects jumped out and ran in the direction of the sewage plant, and while running he fired shots at the police members who returned fire, injuring the suspect. The other two occupants in the vehicle were arrested and the injured suspect received medical treatment was discharged as the injury was not serious. None of the police officials were however injured during the incident.

The police found an undisclosed amount of cash, five cell phones, a magazine with ammunition and one cartridge in their possession. The vehicle was also seized as it was used in the commission of a crime. The three suspects will appear in the Colesberg Magistrate’s court on 01 February 2024 on charges of attempted murder, possession of suspected stolen property and tampering with the registration plate.

The Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in the Northern Cape, Lieutenant General Koliswa Otola commended the team who were involved in the apprehension and arrest of the suspects and expressed her gratitude to the members of Bloemfontein K9 who assisted. She reiterated that criminals will feel the full might of the law if caught in this province.
