The hard work of the detectives at the Galeshewe SAPS Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) unit secured three good sentences during this past month.

The Police welcome the sentence that was handed down to Sylvester Oliphant (28) in Kimberley Regional Court on 29 March 2019 for rape and contravention of a court order. On 3 August 2017 at about 19:15 the accused raped the 25 year old female in De Beers Hoogte, Barkly West. D/Sgt Aretha Claasen was the investigation officer and did a sterling job. The accused was arrested and sentenced 10 years direct imprisonment for rape and a further 12 months for the contravention of a protection order. The sentences will run concurrently.

On 28 July 2018 at about 13:40 Thabiso Jonkers(30) sexually assaulted a 31 year old female in Galeshewe. The investigation officer D/WO Jakob Du Plessis brought forth a good investigation and secured a three year sentence for the sexual assault. The sentencing took place in the Galeshewe Magistrates’ Court on 2 April 2019.

Two males were recently imprisoned in the Kimberley Magistrates Court for the rape of a 14 year old girl. Thabisho Diretse(19) and Tumelo Maporea(20) have been found guilty of raping the victim between 2014 and 2015. The incidents happened in the Transit Camp vicinity in Kagisho and both males were sentenced on 26 March 2019 to 5 years imprisonment for the rape. D/Sgt Lesego Oliphant is commended for the sentences.

“The Northern Cape Provincial Head for FCS, Brig Nicky Mills hereby lauds Lt Col Marli Strydom and her team of investigation officers at Galeshewe FCS and surrounding areas for the superb work. Let us keep on working together and fight crime robustly to ensure that everyone is and feels safe.”
