NORTHERN CAPE — In a decisive move against regional narcotics networks, SAPS Namakwa has intensified its fight against drug trafficking through the ongoing execution of Operation Shanela II. The latest proactive enforcement action highlights the district’s commitment to stripping illicit substances from local communities following a successful late-night roadside interception.

The incident unfolded on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, at approximately 18:35. While conducting routine patrols in Nieuwoudtville, a local police officer flagged down a suspicious white motor vehicle for a standard stop-and-search procedure.

During the search of the vehicle, authorities uncovered a concealed black bag containing suspected mandrax tablets. The seized narcotics carry an estimated street value of R8,000.

A 38-year-old male occupant of the vehicle reportedly admitted to owning the suspected drugs on the spot. He was immediately taken into custody and charged with dealing in drugs. The suspect is expected to make his first appearance before the Calvinia Magistrate’s Court in the coming days.

District Commissioner of Namakwa, Brigadier Schalk Andrews, publicly commended the arresting officer for maintaining a high level of vigilance and proactivity on the streets. Speaking on the broader impact of the campaign, Brigadier Andrews reaffirmed that Operation Shanela II remains highly active. He noted that law enforcement will continue to utilize intelligence-driven operations to specifically target criminal networks and dismantle drug supply chains.

The district police service issued a stern warning to those profiting from the illegal narcotics trade, declaring that the destruction of communities through substance abuse will not be tolerated. Authorities emphasized that they will relentlessly pursue offenders and that there are no safe havens for drug dealers operating within the Namakwa District.
