SANDF member sentenced for murdering wife

The Northern Cape High Court yesterday, 10 May 2018, sentenced former SANDF sergeant, John Thapelo Momogale to 12-years-imprisonment after he was found guilty of murdering his wife, Shelley (26) with an R4 assault rifle at a Kimberley guest house on 5 February 2012.

Momogale was 29-years-old at the time and was convicted for murder with direct intent and unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition. The victim died on the scene as a result of a gunshot wound to her head after the couple had an altercation at the Boitumelo Jwa Sechaba guest house in Minerva Gardens, Kimberley.

The Court sentenced Mamogale five years for illegal possession of firearm and ammunition (two counts taken together) and ten years imprisonment for murder. The three years of the five-year sentence runs concurrently with the ten-year sentence, meaning that Mamogale will serve an effective jail term of 12 years.
