The SAPS welcomes the sentences that was handed down to a 23-year-old man in the Hanover Regional Court, recently.

On Sunday, 26 March 2017 the two boys aged 12 and 14 years old, slept over by the accused at his home in Hanover shanties. Oliphant January, who is known to the victims, raped both the boys in the early hours of the following morning.

One of the victims managed to flee from the accused and call for help. Police successfully opposed bail and January was kept in custody up until his sentencing.

Oliphant January was found guilty and sentenced on two counts of rape. He received 20 years imprisonment for each rape and will serve an effective 30 years imprisonment. The suspect has also been declared unfit to possess a firearm and his name was entered in the National Register for sex offenders.

“The Provincial Head for Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual offences (FCS) unit, Brigadier Nicky Mills commended Investigating Officer, D/Sgt Edwin Magalagadi of the De Aar FCS unit for a job well done. The Police will continue with this mandate entrusted upon us to ensure that perpetrators committing these heinous crimes against children are removed from society, said Mills”.
