The Provincial Head for Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences, Brig Nicky Mills welcomes the 15 year direct rape sentence that was handed down to Lukas Afrikaner (52) in Pofadder Magistrates Court, recently.

The Acting Provincial Commissioner for the Northern Cape, Maj Gen Henriette de Waal commended D/Sgt John Rowen Nortje for his professionalism and commitment that brought about this good sentence.

“Thank you for keeping our communities safe from criminals committing such heinous crimes against our children, especially as we are celebrating youth month,” said Maj Gen de Waal.

On 12 July 2019 at about 23:00, the 16-year-old female victim was on her way home after visiting with some friends in RC Mission, Onseepkans.

The accused accosted the victim from behind and dragged her into the mountains where he repeatedly raped her. After raping the victim, Afrikaner left her there and fled the scene.

The police followed up on information and arrested the suspect on the 19 July 2019. He remained in custody up until his sentencing on 17 June 2021.
