The Provincial Head of FCS Unit in the Northern Cape, Brigadier Nicky Mills welcomed the sentence handed down to rapist, Pieter Arendse (28) on 25 August 2020. On 1 September 2017 at approximately 18:00, the 13-year-old female victim was on her way to her grandparents’ house in Valspan in Jan Kempdorp with her friend. Whilst on their way, they were accosted by the accused and her friend was able to escape.
The accused grabbed the victim, threatened her with violence and dragged her into the veld where she was raped. He was arrested the next day and appeared in the Hartswater Magistrate’s Court.
The investigating officer, Sergeant Zacharia Salokala successfully opposed bail and the accused was remanded in custody until his conviction on 17 July 2020 in the Hartswater Regional court.
He was sentenced to 14 years imprisonment on 25 August 2020 and his name was recorded in the Register for Sexual Offenders.
