Rape of boy (11), man handed 20 year sentence

South African Police Service

The Police Management in the Northern Cape has welcomed a 20 year sentence handed down to a 21-year-old man convicted of raping an 11-year-old boy.

The suspect raped the victim on 30 July 2017, when he was playing in the field with his friends. The suspect was unknown at the time of the incident but through the dedication and commitment of Sergeant Serati of De Aar Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit, the suspect was eventually arrested on January 2019 and was positively identified through a photo identification parade.

Bail was successfully opposed and the suspect was kept in custody until he was found guilty on 30 June 2020, by Petrutsville Regional Court. He is sentenced to 20 years direct imprisonment.

Sergeant Serati is commended for a meticulous investigation which led the conviction of yet another perpetrator
