The Provincial Commissioner in Northern Cape, Lieutenant General Risimati Shivuri has welcomed the sentence handed down earlier this month by Upington Regional Court.
Jan Basie Steenkamp (36) was sentenced to life imprisonment for raping and assaulting a nine year old girl.
The incident happened on 04 June 2016 at the suspect’s house in Grobbershoop. According to the information, Steenkamp invited the girl to his house to give her money. When the girl arrived she was assaulted leaving her unconscious. The victim regained consciousness while Steenkamp was still busy raping her.
The accused then offered the victim water and threatened her not to tell anyone.
Steenkamp was arrested the following day after the incident and charged with assault GBH and rape.
He was found guilty on both charges and sentenced to life imprisonment. Both charges were taken together for the purpose of sentence.
