Diligent investigation by Sergeant Thabiso Mashlishili attached to Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit in Upington was commended by the Acting District Commissioner of ZF Mgcawu Keagekae Besnaar on securing 18 years direct imprisonment handed down for assault and rape on Thursday, 11 March 2021.
The 45-year-old convict, was in a domestic relationship with the victim and on 29 February 2020, both went out together to a tavern.
Later on, the victim left the tavern without notifying her partner. He started looking for her and he later found her with another boyfriend. He started assaulting the victim and dragged her to their residence where he raped her.
After the incident, he decided to run away whereby the police launched a manhunt. He was later arrested and remained in custody during the period of trial.
The SAPS consider violence against women and children to be a priority and urge the public to refrain from such acts of degrading nature and violation of human rights.
