R200k worth of succulents recovered, 2 arrested, Garies

The Garies SAPS pounced on two males for alleged illegal possession of succulents worth approximately R200 000-00.

On 14 December 2021 at approximately 04:00, Sgt Johan De Waal was busy with routine inspections at a farm near Garies.

Sgt De Waal noticed a suspicious looking vehicle stopping on the N7 and making a U-turn.

De Waal did some investigating at the place where the vehicle stopped and found two male suspects in possession of alleged poached Conophytums.

The suspects are aged 22 and 28 and will be appearing in the Springbok Magistrates’ Court soon. The investigation continues.

The Acting District Commander for Namakwa, Col Schalk Andrews commended Sgt Johan De Waal for his vigilance and quick response that led to this outstanding arrest.

Police will increase their efforts in addressing the illegal poaching of succulents in the Namakwa District.
