Orania will cease to exist under EFF rule

Orania falls under the Thembelihle Municipality, in the Northern Cape. The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) candidate said that the little Boer town will cease to exist. In an interview, the EFF stated that they would shake things up in Orania. The mayor said “you cannot have a Boere Stad” in a place like Thembelihle or South Africa.

The EFF are expecting to have an overwhelming victory in the upcoming municipal elections on August 3, 2016. The residents of Orania will hold their own elections and do not perceive the EFF to be a threat. Orania does not receive any services through the Thembelihle Municipality and caters for all their own infrastructure. Orania is home to approximately 1300 white Afrikaans people and was established in 1991. A town set up to preserve the Afrikaans culture and language. Critics accuse the city of rejecting the “rainbow nation” concept. However, the residents of Orania are motivated by a strong desire to preserve their culture and protect their people from the high crime.

Orania, under the Constitution of South Africa under a clause that allows “for the right to self-determination” is legally authorized to exist. For the EFF to claim that the little Afrikaans town would no longer exist would mean that changes need to be made to the constitution, and that could be a battle the EFF would lose.

Julius Malema, the leader of EFF, want the White people in South Africa dispossessed of their land. The EFF want the land that’s already been developed. The land toiled and sown, where houses and roads have been built. Malema has made “land ownership” his key issue, and the EFF are in pursuit of claiming the land.
