The South African Police Service (SAPS) in the Northern Cape has reinforced its commitment to upholding state authority through heightened law enforcement operations. From Monday, 12 May, to Sunday, 18 May 2025, a total of 204 suspects were arrested across all five districts of the province as part of Operation Shanela, a high-density crime-fighting initiative.

Coordinated Multi-Disciplinary Efforts

The operation saw multi-disciplinary police teams executing a range of crime prevention strategies, including:

  • Tracing of wanted suspects by detectives

  • High-visibility patrols

  • Stop-and-search operations

  • Roadblocks and vehicle checkpoints

Serious Offenses Uncovered

The apprehended suspects face charges for various serious crimes, such as:

  • Robbery

  • Drug-related offenses (dealing and possession)

  • Assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm

  • Common assault

  • Residential burglary

  • Malicious damage to property

Additionally, 17 unlicensed liquor outlets were shut down for failing to comply with legal regulations.

Extensive Searches and Inspections

During the operation:

  • 3,464 vehicles and 6,603 individuals were stopped and searched at various checkpoints.

  • Compliance inspections were conducted at farms, mines, second-hand dealers, liquor outlets, scrapyards, and both formal and informal businesses.

Contraband Seized

Authorities confiscated significant quantities of:

  • Alcohol

  • Cash

  • Dangerous weapons

  • Uncut diamonds

  • Illicit drugs, including dagga, crystal meth, and mandrax

  • Firearms

  • Vehicles

Leadership Engagement with Communities

On Thursday, 15 May 2025Deputy Provincial Commissioner for Policing, Major General Johnny Besnaar, alongside ZF Mgcawu District Commissioner, Major General Monica Sebili, conducted a walkabout in the ZF Mgcawu District. The engagement included discussions with station commanders, community members, and Community Police Forum (CPF) structures, reinforcing the importance of police-community collaboration.

Ongoing Community Outreach

The SAPS continues to conduct weekly community outreach programs and awareness campaigns to address trending crime issues in each district.

Provincial Commissioner Commends Efforts

Lieutenant General Koliswa Otola, the Provincial Commissioner of the Northern Cape, expressed her appreciation for public support and praised the multi-disciplinary teams for their dedication in combating crime across the province.

Operation Shanela remains a key component of the SAPS strategy to ensure safety and security in the Northern Cape, with sustained efforts expected in the coming weeks.
