The Courts in the Northern Cape handed down sentences to various offenders for criminal activities that borders on gender-based violence and femicide.

A 43-year-old rape accused raped a 12-year-old girl on different occasions in Keimoes during 2022 and was arrested 8 December 2022.

He was sentenced on to 5 years; imprisonment, suspended for 5 years’ for statutory rape in the Upington Magistrates’ Court on 12 June 2023. The case was investigated by Sgt Derrick Dippenaar of the Kakamas Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offenses (FCS) unit.

In Garies a house was broken into and the accused tried raping the sleeping female (30) victim on 22 March 2021.

The victim woke up and the adult male accused, Shaun Klein (26) fled, but was arrested and bail was successfully opposed by police. Klein was sentenced on 13 June 2023 in the Garies Regional Court to 3 years; for house breaking and the attempted rape case was withdrawn. Sergeant Landrew Cloete of Springbok FCS investigated the case.

In Kenhardt, Carmin Prins (21) was found guilty for assaulting a 10-year-old boy by kicking him all over his body.

She was sentenced for assault GBH to 18 months imprisonment suspended for 5 years. This case was investigated by Detective Sergeant Mohutsiwa of the Kakamas FCS.

The SAPS Management commends all the FCS investigating officials for their dedication, loyalty and commitment that ensured that no impunity is granted for perpetrators of GBVF in the Northern Cape Province.
