The South African Police Service (SAPS) management in the Northern Cape has welcomed the convictions and sentences handed down by the Hopetown Regional Court on Wednesday, 02 July 2025, against three individuals involved in a 2019 rape and housebreaking case.
Klaas van Rooyen (27) received a ten-year prison sentence for rape and an additional three years for housebreaking and theft, with the sentences to run consecutively. His co-accused, Jack Jantjies (29) and Jaco Demas (34), were each sentenced to three years’ imprisonment for housebreaking and theft. Additionally, all three were declared unfit to possess a firearm.
The court heard that on 17 May 2019, a 28-year-old woman and her sister were at home when they noticed an unfamiliar smell inside their residence. They later retired to their bedrooms. The following morning, the victim discovered she had been raped and that several valuable items, including a music box, had been stolen.
The case was reported to the police and assigned to Detective Sergeant Frans Louw of the Hopetown Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit. His meticulous investigation led to the recovery of the stolen property, including the music box.
Initially, four suspects were arrested in connection with the crime. However, one of them passed away during the trial. Forensic evidence later linked one of the accused to the rape, securing a conviction.
