The Acting Provincial Commissioner of the Northern Cape, Major General Johan Bean welcomed the 20 year prison sentence handed down in the Carnarvon Regional court on 2 June 2021 to the 19-year-old half-brother of the 7-year-old female victim.

The incident occurred on 1 February 2020 in Vosburg where the accused went to the home of the victim and offered her money to accompany him to a local tavern.

The victim who trusted her half-brother, accompanied him but he took her to an abandoned building instead where he raped her.

After raping her, he took her back home and she reported the incident to her sister who in turn informed the police.

The accused was arrested on 2 February 2020 and remained in custody until he was sentenced on 2 June 2021 to 20 years direct prison sentence. He was also declared unfit to possess a firearm and his name was recorded in the National Sexual Offences register.

The Provincial Head of the FCS unit in the Northern Cape, Brig Nicky Mills applauded the Investigating officer, Sgt Floris Fritz from the Carnarvon FCS unit for the thorough investigation of the case. The sentence comes as we are commemorating Child Protection Week where it is in our hands to stop the cycle of abuse, violence and exploitation of our children.
