A newborn baby girl was found abandoned under a tree next to a railway in Cassandra in Kimberly this afternoon.

ER24 paramedics arrived on the scene and found the child lying underneath the tree.

The baby was immediately assessed and found to be apparently just a few hours old. Paramedics also noticed that the umbilical cord had been completely torn and that the child was suffering from mild hypothermia.

ER24 paramedics immediately treated the child and gradually began to warm her.

Once treated, paramedics transported her to Kimberley Provincial Hospital for urgent treatment.

This incident was reported to the local authorities for further investigations.
