Manhunt puts Marydale house robbery suspect safely behind bars

A manhunt in Marydale secured the arrest of a farm attack suspect and recovery of stolen goods.

On Saturday, 14 October 2023 at about 17:30 the 18-year-old suspect entered the farm house near Marydale under the pretense of asking water from the elderly female farm owner.

The suspect allegedly overpowered the 66-year-old victim and severely assaulted and stabbed her in the face and head and fled with two cellphones, vehicle keys, binoculars, alcohol and a cooler box.

The police responded and the victim was transported for medical treatment at a local hospital.

The police activated all the necessary resources and neighbouring stations including Marydale SAPS, reservists, Prieska Crime Prevention unit, Upington SAPS K-9 Unit and local farmers who assisted in the search and apprehension of the suspect.

The team traced and arrested the suspect on Monday, 16 October 2023 at 06:00 on a farm near Vanwyksvlei and recovered the stolen property.

The suspect is charged with house robbery and attempted murder and will appear in court soon.

The Pixley Ka Seme District Commissioner, Maj Gen Nomana Mtukushe commended the SAPS members and the local farmers and farming communities for their swift response and relentless efforts that led to the arrest of the perpetrator.
