Man, who beat girlfriend to death, handed 20 year sentence, Prieska

The District Commander of Pixley Ka Seme, Brigadier Nomana Adonis welcomed the 20 year jail term handed down to Laorens Coetzee (41) in the Prieska Regional Court on Thursday,27 January 2022.

Laorens was found guilty as charged on a count of murder.

Evidence presented in court by the investigating officer, Sergeant Swarts was overwhelming and resulted in the successful prosecution of the accused.

During court proceedings, the court heard that on 3 November 2017, the accused arrived at the residence where he stayed with his girlfriend. He found that his girlfriend did not cook supper that evening. An argument erupted between the two and the accused severely assaulted his girlfriend.

He then fled the scene, leaving his girlfriend helpless and she later died as a result of the injuries.

The neighbours could not save the victim, because when they arrived at the crime scene she already passed on.

Brigadier Nomana Adonis applauded the investigating officer, Sergeant Swarts for his excellent investigative work and for working cohesively with the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) including the Department of Justice (DoJ).
