A 24-year-old man from Kuyasa has been sentenced to an effective 30 years’ imprisonment for the rape of a 10-year-old girl. The abuse began when the victim was 8 years old and continued between 2023 and 2025.
The accused was the victim’s neighbour. The young girl was too afraid to report the ordeal. On 5 May 2025, a friend noticed that something was bothering her. The victim confided in the friend, and they subsequently reported the matter to a teacher.
Warrant Officer Melany Oliphant of the De Aar Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit was informed of the incident and led the investigation. The accused was arrested on 6 May 2025. The investigating officer opposed bail, and the accused was denied bail. He remained in custody until the finalisation of the trial.
The accused was recently found guilty on two counts of rape in the Colesberg Regional Court. He was convicted and sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment for rape on count 1, and a further 15 years’ imprisonment for rape on count 2.
The court further ordered that his name be entered into the National Register for Sex Offenders and declared him unfit to possess a firearm.
