A local court has sentenced 30-year-old Piet Van Wyk to 20 years’ imprisonment for the murder of 26-year-old Gerozade Bezuidenhout, a case that has underscored the Northern Cape detectives’ commitment to securing justice.

The conviction and sentencing were handed down in the Keimoes Regional Court on Monday, 08 September 2025.

The tragic incident originated from a violent altercation on the afternoon of Saturday, 16 March 2024. According to evidence presented in court, a heated argument broke out between the two men at approximately 15:20. The confrontation escalated to the point where Bezuidenhout chased Van Wyk with a spade.

The deceased abandoned the chase after a short while and turned back to return to his home. However, the situation reignited later when Van Wyk returned to Bezuidenhout’s residence armed with two knives.

A second altercation erupted, during which Van Wyk stabbed Bezuidenhout once in the chest. The injury proved fatal, and Bezuidenhout succumbed to it at the scene.

Following the incident, the Keimoes South African Police Service (SAPS) registered a case of murder. A dedicated team was dispatched to the crime scene to conduct preliminary investigations and commence the manhunt.

The suspect, who had initially fled, was later arrested by police. The murder weapon was also successfully recovered. Van Wyk was subsequently released on bail as the investigation continued, pending his final court appearance.

The Keimoes Regional Court ultimately found Piet Van Wyk guilty of murder, culminating in this week’s 20-year prison sentence.
