In a case that has gripped the community, the Kimberley High Court has delivered a measure of justice for the family of a domestic violence victim, sentencing her killer to 20 years of direct imprisonment on Monday, 08 September 2025.

The tragic sequence of events began on the night of 26 February 2024. The 35-year-old victim, whose name has been withheld, had visited the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) pay point in Warrenton shortly before midnight. She was accompanied by her 40-year-old partner, Butiki Maboitshega.

Tragically, on their journey home, the woman was murdered somewhere between the towns of Warrenton and Ikhutseng. In a chilling attempt to conceal the crime, Maboitshega then transported his victim’s body to his own residence in Ikhutseng.

The investigation was set in motion after alert and concerned neighbours contacted the South African Police Service. Officers responded swiftly to the scene. Upon their arrival, Maboitshega initially attempted to evade responsibility, claiming he had discovered the victim already deceased.

His account, however, quickly unraveled under the scrutiny of a thorough police investigation. The evidence gathered was sufficient to secure his arrest, and he was formally charged with murder.

After a lengthy judicial process, the Kimberley High Court found Butiki Maboitshega guilty of the brutal crime. On 08 September 2025, he was convicted and sentenced to 20 years in prison, ensuring he will be held directly accountable for his actions.
