The steadfast commitment of detectives in the Northern Cape Province to securing justice for victims of gender-based violence and femicide was underscored this week with the successful sentencing of a rape accused.

Mpho Gift Mtshali (27) was sentenced to 18 years’ direct imprisonment in the Mothibistad Regional Court on Tuesday, 09 September 2025, for the rape of a 16-year-old girl.

The court heard that the incident occurred on 16 October 2021, at approximately 00:20. The accused, who was known to the victim, knocked on the window of her bedroom. He then threatened her with a firearm and proceeded to rape her forcefully.

Following the assault, Mtshali gave the victim R100 before fleeing the scene. His subsequent arrest by local detectives led to a thorough investigation and a successful prosecution.

In addition to the 18-year prison term, the court declared Mtshali unfit to possess a firearm.
