The Northern Cape Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Joey Kers commended Sergeant John Nortje for the meticulous investigation of the triple rape cases against Charl Watt (24). Charl was convicted and sentenced to 20 years imprisonment by the Upington Regional Court on Friday, 2 July 2021.

The Regional Court convicted him for raping three boys aged 10, 11 and 15 in November 2019.

The victims met Charl in Pofadder Central Business District and he asked them to follow him and he will give them R20 to buy food. He took them to a nearby bush at Skerpioendraai in Pofadder where he raped them. One of the victims managed to break free to seek help.

Immediately the investigating officer Sergeant John Nortje launched a manhunt, and the victims positively identified Charl as the one who had raped them. Charl was denied bail, and was remanded in custody until he was convicted and sentenced.

The Northern Cape Provincial Head for Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences, Brig Nicky Mills commended the Department of Justice and the National Prosecuting Authority for continuing to restore hope and faith in the victims of crime and in the justice system of the Republic of South Africa by sending criminals to jail.
