The Northern Cape SAPS welcomes the life sentence secured through DNA links for the double rape in Kuruman.

On 21 December 2014 a 16-year-old female victim from Bothitong, Kuruman informed her mother she was raped by an unknown male.

The accused accosted his second female victim (14) on 31 December 2014, when he jumped out of a taxi, hit her with a bottle in the face and raped the girl. The friends that was with the victim during the New Year’s Eve celebrations fled on foot in different directions.

Thorough investigations through a forensic DNA lead linked Kgotsietsile Mokomele (27) to both the rapes.

He was arrested and found guilty on both offences.

On 7 July 2022 Mokomele was sentenced to 15 years for the first rape and life sentence for the second rape.

The Acting Provincial Commander for Serial and Electronic Crimes Investigation unit, Lt Col Marli Strydom applauds D/Sgt Tokkie Van Rensburg for her meticulous investigations and assertiveness in court that led to this sterling double rape sentence.
