Kuruman home invasion and rape, accused sentenced to 28 years

The SAPS welcomes the 28 years’ direct imprisonment that was handed down to Aobakwe Moagi(26) for rape, house breaking and kidnapping, recently.

On the evening of 8 October 2020, the 19-year-old female victim was asleep at her house in Camden Village, Kuruman. The accused broke into her house and dragged her out of bed.

The victim fled to the house of a neighbour but was followed by the accused. He threatened and assaulted her in the presence of the elderly lady.

Aobakwe forcefully took the victim to a nearby shanty where he raped her several times. The accused later fell asleep and the victim took the opportunity to escape and reported the incident to the police.

The accused was arrested, police opposed bail and he was kept in custody until his sentencing.

On 4 October 2022 the accused was found guilty in the Mothibistad Regional Court and sentenced as follows:

Rape: 15 years
House breaking with the intention to rape: 8 years
Kidnapping: 5 years imprisonment

Aobakwe Moagi must serve a total of 28 years direct imprisonment and was declared unfit to possess a firearm.

The Acting Provincial Head for Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual offenses unit (FCS), Col Sipho Kheswa lauded D/ Sgt Noma Keetile of the Kuruman FCS for her thorough investigative work that ensured no impunity is granted to the perpetrator of these heinous crimes.
