As the South African Police Service (SAPS) urges communities to remain vigilant against violent crime during the festive season, a significant prison sentence has been welcomed as a testament to their commitment to justice.

The Frances Baard District Commissioner, Major General Charlotte Makgari, has lauded the fifteen-year prison term handed down to 27-year-old Samkelo Blessing Komazi by the Kimberley Regional Court.

The conviction stems from a fatal incident that occurred on Friday, 22 December 2023. Police in Kimberley responded to a complaint of a stabbing on Stockdale Street, where upon arrival, they discovered a male victim, 24-year-old Donovan Reed, with a fatal stab wound to the abdomen.

According to preliminary police investigations, an altercation ensued between the deceased and the accused, which culminated in the stabbing. Komazi was arrested shortly after the incident and charged with murder.

Following several court appearances, the trial concluded with the recent sentencing of Komazi to 15 years imprisonment.
