A 58-year-old former Acting Municipal Manager of KaiGarib Municipality, and current HOD of Department of Public Works in Northern Cape Mr Johny Mckay appeared briefly before Upington Magistrate Court on Friday, 28 October 2022, facing charges of contravention of pension funds Act 24 of 1956.

Mckay was arrested earlier on the morning of 28 October 2022, by the Hawks Serious Commercial Crime Investigation team based in Upington.

It is alleged that between September 2021 and March 2022, the accused failed to ensure that contributions deducted from KaiGarib municipal employees was paid to the consolidated Retirement Fund for Local Government.

Total prejudice to the fund exceeds R9 million.

The accused was granted R5000-00 bail and the case is postponed to 21 November 2022, for the matter to be transferred to Specialised Commercial Crime Court. Investigation in the matter continues.
