Impersonating police officers, 3 robbers nabbed, Barkly West

Three men aged between 35 and 60 have today, 28 May 2018 appeared before Barkly West Magistrates’ Court on a charge of robbery and impersonating police officers.

It is alleged that on 25 May 2018, the complainant had just withdrew money from an ATM when she noticed that she was being followed by two male persons who walked passed her. She saw one of the male persons picking up a large amount of money and the suspect then told the complainant that they can share the money, since she saw him picking it up, the victim agreed and followed the suspect to a quiet area on request by the suspect.

While sharing the money, one of the suspects presented himself as a police officer and threatened to arrest the complainant. They allegedly took all her belongings including a Cellphone, handbag and money she just withdrew.

The suspects then fled in a gold Opel Astra, leaving her stranded at a nearby shopping centre. She notified a police vehicle that was doing patrols in the area and the suspects’ vehicle was immediately pursued. The suspects were caught within a few kilometres just outside Barkley West and were positively identified and all the complainants’ belongings were recovered.

The case has been reminded to 04 June 2018 for formal bail application and the three are remanded in custody.
