The Provincial Head of FCS in the Northern Cape, Brig Nicky Mills welcomed the life sentence handed down to a rapist on 17 September 2020, in the Kimberley Regional court and also indicated that perpetrators committing such heinous crimes will feel the full might of the law.

On 11 October 2018, the then 29-year-old female victim was walking to her home in Homelite with the accused whom she knew. He overpowered her and took her to the stadium where he assaulted her with a brick, threatened her with a knife and then raped her.

The accused then told her that his mother could tend to the open wound she sustained in her face and she accompanied him to a shack. At the shack he threatened her again, robbed her of R150 and raped her a second time.

The accused, Sydwill van der Ross (24) was arrested, found guilty and sentenced today as follows:

Life imprisonment for 2 charges of rape
6 months imprisonment for Grievous Bodily Harm and Robbery.

The Galeshewe FCS commander, Lt Col Marli Strydom, lauded the Investigating Officer, Warrant Officer Conrad de Jongh for the meticulous investigation which resulted in the removal of the perpetrator from society.
