The Northern Cape SAPS welcomes the rape and assault with the intent to commit grievous bodily harm (GBH) sentences that were handed down to a Benjamin Harry Maarman (23) in the Kimberley Regional Court on 17 April 2019. Maarman was sentenced to 15 years direct imprisonment for rape and 3 years for the assault GBH of an 8 year old girl from Ivory Park in Roodepan near Kimberley.

On 26 April 2017 at about 18:00 the accused accompanied the victim from the shop as they are known to each other. Just before they could reach the victim’s house in Ivory Park, Maarman pulled the girl into the veld and raped her. The accused also assaulted the victim with a stone on her head.

The accused was arrested and will serve an effective 18 years imprisonment for this heinous act.

“The Acting Deputy Provincial Commissioner for Crime Detection in the Northern Cape, Brigadier Nicky Mills lauds D/Sgt Daniel Satisfied of the Galeshewe SAPS Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences unit for a job well done. We trust that this sentencing will send out a stern warning to all perpetrators that the SAPS will surely be out there in full force to ensure that no impunity is granted to offenders of such odious crimes.”
