Hawks arrest suspect for illegal possession of firearms and incitement

South African Police Service

A multi-disciplinary operation carried out by members of the Hawks, together with Upington Crime Intelligence, K9 and Explosive Units at Augrabies, in Kakamas uncovered a .22 rifle and live ammunition on Thursday 30 April 2020.

The operation was a swift response to the allegation of mobilizing attacks to local taverns in Augrabies, which constitute incitement to commit public violence in contravention with Act 17 of 1956.

A search was conducted at the house of a 74-year-old suspect and a firearm and ammunition were seized.

Additional items that include three tablets, laptop, memory cards and a computer were also seized for further investigation on a charge of incitement.

The suspect is expected to appear in the Kakamas Magistrate court on Monday, 04 May 2020.
