Gang rape: Roodepan rapist handed a 30 year sentence

The Kimberley Regional Court sentenced Charlie Hlenti (23) to 30 years imprisonment for raping a 22-year-old woman.

The incident occurred in June 2018, at about 00:00 at Roodepan, when the victim was walking alone and two men accosted her and took turns raping before robbing her of a cell phone.

On 2 January 2019, the investigating Officer, Warrant Officer JJ Du Plessis of Galeshewe Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) followed-up on information that led to Hlenti’s arrest.

His bail application was successfully opposed and he was found guilty on 14 February 2020. He was sentenced to 30 years imprisonment for rape and five years for robbery, both sentences will concurrently.

The Police Management in the Northern Cape has welcomed the sentence and applauded Warrant Office Du Plessis for a job well done in ensuring that the perpetrator serves jail time. The community is also acknowledged for their support in providing tip-offs.
