Fraud and corruption: Police constable appears in Upington court

A 39-year-old police constable is expected to appear before Upington Magistrates’ Court on 5 November 2020, on a charge of fraud and corruption.

It is alleged that the member informed the widow of a late captain in the service that he had connections with people from GEPF who can fast track the pension pay-out if she is to pay R3000 cash. The suspect allegedly kept pestering the victim to pay the money which was paid as the victim could not take the pressure anymore.

The matter was investigated and the member was arrested by the Anti-Corruption Investigative Unit (ACIU).

The Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Phiwe Mnguni had condemned the member’s conduct and warned that the service will not tolerate corrupt and criminal actions by members of the Police.

The police investigation continues.
