The Hartswater Magistrate’s Court has sentenced 64-year-old Moatlhodi Matthews Nthutang, a former instructor at Highway Driving School, to three years of direct imprisonment with no option of a fine for corruption.
Nthutang was arrested in March 2021 alongside a traffic official in Jan Kempdorp during a sting operation conducted by the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation team. The arrest followed allegations that Nthutang and the official were involved in a scheme to issue Code 14 driver’s licenses in exchange for bribes.
Investigations revealed that in February 2021, authorities received information implicating the duo in fraudulently issuing licenses without conducting proper tests on applicants. Learner drivers were allegedly instructed to pay R3,500 to secure their licenses unlawfully.
While Nthutang was convicted and handed a three-year prison term, the traffic officer involved in the case was acquitted.
