De Aar court sends a harsh message to housebreakers

A 42-year-old male, Charles George Tenkwan, was sentenced to 8 years direct imprisonment by the De Aar Regional Court on 29 January 2021, for housebreaking with intent to commit a crime unknown to the Public Prosecutor wherein he broke into a house whilst the owner was inside on 16 August 2020.

The accused, Mr Tenkwan was found guilty in the De Aar Magistrate’s Court and transferred to the regional court for sentencing as Mr Tenkwan had a series of previous convictions on property related crimes which are:

4 housebreaking and theft
12 Theft General
1 possession of stolen Property.

The Regional Court Magistrate, Miss Venter started by endorsing the guilty verdict handed out by the Magistrate’s Court despite the not guilty plea by Mr Tenkwan, in her sentencing she said: “De Aar in the province is one of the towns with the highest rate of burglaries where its citizens sleep in fear because of burglaries, the citizens of De Aar deserve to live without fear.

The Regional court sentenced Mr Tenkwan to 8 years direct imprisonment and warned him in terms of Section 286 of the Criminal Procedure Act, that should he be found guilty of a similar crime he would be declared a habitual offender.

The investigating officer, Warrant Officer Dawids was applauded by the Station Commander, Colonel Christie and the Branch Commander, Lieutenant Colonel Sukazi for his meticulous investigation.
