Conman sentenced to 20 years for two rapes, Kuruman

A 28 year old conman, Patrick Tuelo Malete will sit behind locked prison doors for an effective 20 years. On 16 September 2019, the Kuruman Regional Court found Patrick Tuelo Malete guilty on two counts of rape and one count of theft and imprisoned him. In two separate incidents, in August 2018 Patrick raped two women aged 18 and 27.

On 3 August 2018 at approximately 12:45 Patrick grabbed an 18 year old matric pupil and dragged her into bushes at knife point and raped her. On the day of the incident the pupil was walking home from the hair salon, as she was preparing for her matric dance.

On 13 August 2018, just ten days after raping the matric pupil, he met an unsuspecting woman who was job hunting in Kuruman CBD, and conned her. He promised her that he would arrange for her to meet his employer, who is in need of employees. He exchanged contact numbers with her. He telephonically contacted her the following day and advised her to meet him near or at the Kuruman Airstrip. On the woman’s arrival at the Kuruman Airstrip, she met with the aggressive and violent Patrick who threatened to kill her with a knife. Patrick took the woman further into the bushes and raped her at knife point.

The police investigation, led by Constable Freddy Moamogwa, saw Patrick arrested this year in early January after he was linked to both rape cases through DNA.

The Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Peter Shivuri commended the investigating officer, Constable Freddy Moamogwa for applying investigative skills effectively by ensuring that the National Prosecuting Authority and Department of Justice unanimously remove Patrick from society and put him for twenty years behind bars
