A thorough investigation by Detective Constable Rosy Senye of the Galeshewe Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit has led to the conviction and sentencing of 24-year-old John Swarts to 15 years’ direct imprisonment for rape.

The Barkly West Regional Court handed down the sentence in connection with an attack that took place on Monday, 29 January 2023, on Pniel Farm near Barkly West.

According to court proceedings, the 26-year-old victim was walking from town toward the farm when she encountered Swarts, who was collecting cans in the veld. Moments later, he charged at her, held a broken bottle to her neck, and forced her to the ground while undressing her. Fearing for her life, the victim complied. Swarts then raped her before fleeing the scene.

The court found Swarts guilty of rape and imposed a 15-year prison sentence. Additionally, he was declared unfit to possess a firearm, and his name will be added to the National Register for Sex Offenders.
